The 'meaning' of a modern work of art can be very particular. For the conservator restorer, it is important to encompass the concept in the restoration approach. The artist is a crucial source for revealing and understanding the meaning of an artwork within his oeuvre. He may also deliver a lot of information about the materials used and the technique or process which he has applied. Much attention has been devoted to developing effective methods of interviewing an artist. Questions about the artist’s intentions regarding specific artwork in his oeuvre, its meaning and how the work is best exhibited are discussed. Although the conservator restorerer may consult the artist, how the treatment itself is carried out is ultimately determined by the conservator.
