For a more indepth analysis of binders and pigments we have several instrumental analytical techniques at our disposal. Performed using highly sensitive equipment, they are mainly used for the study of very small amounts of sample material. These techniques are of increasing importance in the examination of paintings. In the laboratory, the SRAL has an electron microscope whereby, using SEM / EDX techniques, samples can be studied and elements can be analysed. For studying binding materials, SRAL also has its own infrared spectroscopy equipment (FTIR). For other techniques SRAL cooperates with several research institutes.
